Local Primary School enjoys a Farmhouse Breakfast

Local Primary School welcomes a Farmhouse Breakfast
Weston Community Primary School opened their doors to the local community on Thursday offering them a breakfast made solely from local Isle of Wight produce.

Organised by the IW Economic Partnership and supported by the NFU the event attracted all of the school’s 62 pupils with parents, grandparents, governors and neighbours of the school also attending. A breakfast of oaty pancakes and porridge was cooked by the Community Chefs which proved so popular people were going back for seconds.

“Our doors opened at 8am and the school hall was full soon after” said Head Teacher Lynda Evans.

The pupils of Weston Primary had additional visitors including the School Milk Project who showed how milk got from the cow to their milk bottles and NFU farmers; John Osman of Warren Farm and Judi Griffin from Briddlesford Lodge Farm. A surprise visitor was Charlotte the cow, complete with udders, who received a warm welcome especially when Charlotte was revealed to be their Head Teacher, Lynda Evans.

Lynda said “It was a fantastic event for the School and great that so many from the local community attended. Not only did they get a great breakfast but also learnt about the milk production process”.

The Home Grown Cereal Association’s (HGCA) Farmhouse Breakfast Week provides a perfect opportunity to promote the wealth of wonderful breakfast produce available on the Isle of Wight and the importance of breakfast as a meal. Research has shown that eating a breakfast helps children function better in school than those who skip the first meal of the day. Results show that children who start the day with cereal are:
9% more alert
17% less anxious
10% less likely to suffer memory and attention span difficulties than those that have no breakfast.
